The aim of this blog is to collect and archive my selected thoughts, ideas, feelings, reactions, and opinions on subject matters that pique my interest. These entries represent initial drafts that may contain grammatical and spelling errors and whose substance and position could still change, and which, at some point, I could decide to put together into in-depth articles that will be posted on the main Saved Content and Poverty Sucks sites.

Younger Gamers Now Prefer Newer Final Fantasy Characters

A poll of Japanese students revealed their favorite female characters of the Final Fantasy series.  Three of the top five characters chosen were from the most recent of the past releases from the franchise.  This seems to be the result of the younger generation's greater familiarity with the newer titles compared to the old ones.

In previous polls, female characters from Final Fantasy VI, VII, and X could be found in the top spots.  The main character from the most recent of the past Final Fantasy titles, Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, earned a spot at the top in more recent polling.

In the past, Aerith Gainsbrough of FF7 usually topped the voting with Tifa Lockheart, also from FF7, close behind.  Final Fantasy VI, at one point, the most popular game in the franchise, was also usually represented at the top of the voting results.

When FFX and FFX-2 came along, its main female character, Yuna, rose through the ranks to settle behind Aerith in popularity.  Now it seems that FF13 with its main protagonist, Lightning, is ascending in recognition among fans.

As new titles are released and younger generations of gamers start playing, older titles receive less attention as newer titles get more publicity while young players are less familiar with older games.  Eventually, older games will fade in popularity, with only the die-hard fans still holding the torch for their favorite games.
