Call of Duty World League Competition has a Prize Pool of $200,000 Offered by Activision

An esports competition involving Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is now offering a prize pool of $200,000.  I don't think Activision, the publisher of the Call of Duty franchise, has been heavily involved in esports before.

The earliest esports efforts involved Activision's original Starcraft and the DotA mod of World of Warcraft III.  These however were not officially sanctioned by Activision.

Starcraft II was later Activision's first offical foray into esports.  The popularity of the game has declined a lot in recent years however.

Activision is now pushing its games to be represented in esports.  Heroes of the Storm is suited to be an esports title because the MOBA genre is an esports mainstay.  Overwatch, an FPS, also has MOBA elements and is very popular right now.

Despite the fact that the Call of Duty franchise has been around for more than a decade, with its first game in the series released around the same time that DotA was introduced, there has been no esports competition revolving around the Call of Duty games.  It is therefore surprising to see that there are now esports tournaments focused on Call of Duty Infinite Warfare sponsored by Activision.

It's odd that for a company whose games were pioneers in esports, that it is only now pushing for its games to be involved in officially sanctioned competitions.  Call of Duty as an esports title should have happened a long time ago because of its popularity as a multiplayer game.  I feel that Activision has an uphill climb to catch up to the popularity of the esports games of Valve and Riot Games.
